Japanese Otaku Market For 2007 Totals nearly 187 billion ¥

Media Create, a marketing research group for the entertainment sector (similar to Nielsen Ratings), has issued a white paper for the 2008 Otaku Industry (yes, Otaku-dom is seen as an industry). According to this white paper, Japan’s otaku market stands at approximately $1.651 billion USD or ¥186.88 billion JPY.

The report breaks down as follows (thanks to ANN):

Category Total in Yen Total in US$ Market Percentage
DVD/CD (Anime) 34.02 billion 301 million 18.2%
Published Materials 40.67 billion 359 million 21.8%
Games 56.08 billion 495 million 30.0%
Figures and Various Goods 28.18 billion 249 million 15.1%
Dōjinshi 27.73 billion 245 million 14.9%

On the other side of the map, ICv2 has released a report on the North American otaku market which expands on the details they provided during a conference at the New York Anime Festival earlier this month, during which time they estimated the market to stand at $400 million USD for DVD Sales and $200 million USD for manga sales.

There’s something called “dying on the inside.”

Too many crappy anime / manga titles relying on the “moe” and “gag” themes. Not enough serious, actually entertaining, and cash-worthy titles out there.

Wow, if Naruto is your first anime that got you interested in anime then you don’t know what your missing out on. There are so many anime series out there better than naruto.

Anyways those market %’s look pretty nice, guess that is one reason you don’t hear anything in the news from media companies attacking japanese ppl.

I think more animes should be like Gundam wing or the miyazaki classics. Miyazaki’s movies are good for teaching lessons to children and remind me a lot of the disney movies I watched now and as a kid! (probably b/c they’re produced with ghibli films and disney! ^.^) Gundam wing is a good political cartoon! Even with the giant robots!
