Live-Action DBZ Movie Announced!!
Wow. After years and years of rumors about a potential live-action Dragonball Z movie, it has finally been announced that work is soon to commence! April 1st was a long time ago, so I am guessing this time the news is for real.
The film will be produced by 20th Century Fox (as had always been rumoured) and will have a budget of US$100 million. Filming will take place in Montreal this fall and winter.
There is good potential Fox will screw the film up, but is is certainly extremely interesting news for DBZ fans nonetheless. Please discuss your thoughts on this one in the comment section.

Well… 1) I’ll believe it when I see the trailers start to come out.
2) I sure hope they’re filming in Montreal because it has some good soundstages, because there’s NOWHERE in Dragon World that looks like Montreal. There’s a few locations that look like the classic Wild West, but most of it’s Japan or China or somewhere tropical, and the cities are WIERD.
3)Cast choices will be deadly crucial here. The script — even if done well — can’t help but be very hokey sounding unless you’ve got actors that can carry off the direct, simple lines with conviction. I’ve seen some excellent suggestions for casting, but of course one of the problems in this area is that even if you have the ideal choice (e.g., Wesley Snipes for Piccolo, Jet Li for Vegita), there’s no guarantee that the actor in question is either available or interested).
4) You will need a director and effects studio that Really Understands the SCALE here. DBZ operates on a combat scale that makes most superhero movies look like toddlers having a shoving match. The recent Fantastic Four movie reached the scale with the Silver Surfer and Galactus (who would be respectable, though not overwhelming, early-on opponents in DBZ), but showed us very, very little actual action on that level. One needs to remember that these are individual warriors who fire blasts equivalent to the Death Star’s main cannon. Routinely. One of the reasons they NEED the Seven Dragonballs is to be able to fix the damage they do to the world.
5) Perhaps the hardest part of adapting DBZ of all is the *WIERDNESS* of the universe. It does NOT take place in a universe anything like our own. This is a world in which super-mad-science is possible — capsules which hold entire houses, super-powered androids with infinite power sources, etc.; This is a world in which “God” is an *appointed position* which is periodically vacated and replaced by a new “God”. This is a world in which the afterlife is run by a bureaucracy. This is a universe in which you can gain a Wish that will reshape the entire world… and you can do that once a year, if you can find the Dragonballs. This is a world in which human beings coexist with at least a dozen other anthropomorphic and nonanthropomorphic intelligent species, ranging from pterodactyl-people to talking turtles.
Without at least some of that bizarreness, it’s not Dragonball Z. The quirkiness of the world is part of the charm and the essential nature of the show.
Overall, therefore, I think that — even if this actually goes forward — it’s very unlikely to result in an actual decent adaptation. I can always hope, I suppose, and I’ll keep an eye out.

Thanks much, Papa. I’ve been a DBZ fanboy since … um, ‘92-93, anyway, long before it came to America. Used to cosplay Goku on occasion. I’ve even worked a few (subtle) DBZ refs into my published writing.
I would like nothing better than to see a really good live-action DBZ movie. I’d do a great deal to help make it happen, if there actually was anything I could do.
However, seeing the general track record of adaptations, I’m trying to keep expectations very, very, very low.
Ofcourse they’re prolly going to mess this film up tremendously…the purpose of them waiting so long was probably to wait until most of the fans gave up on the series alltogether.So that once they made the film,if it sucked the criticism wouldnt be so detrimental…Just think how much they had riding on it,if they would have come out with this film back in 02,or 03 or watever year…the slightest news,and everyone from the net,to magizines to people calling fox studios were going crazy…if they wouldve made the film then,and it didnt stand up to fans expectations,they wouldve had a bigger problem on there hands,ofcourse it would done the best in the box office then,but it would been the only movie im sure…But we’ll see,Fox waiting so long now,better insure that they did there homework!!!

@Ryk E. Spoor: I presume you are referring to the Chinese adaption of Dragon Ball? Well, I guess we won’t count that. If the film is even close to the level the first X-Men was on, it might get somewhere. However, judging from the poll results, it’s doubtful.

I think If Fox gets enough interest in the filming of DBZ live action. Then I will Certainly take part In watching. But there are some things they have to keep in prior to the original animated series. Also stupid time line changes. They will not be following the anime verbatim. Akira toriyama wanted too much control, so FOX has basically cut him out of the equation. You’ll see a DragonBall that is modernized with a more believable story. It won’t be the wacky shit from the anime, it’ll be more serious toned.

I think they should pick try and pick the best looking cast. but, they should do voice overs with sean schemmel as goku and so on. whoever the original english voice actors are. I dont want to hear the voice of hugh jackman as goku. that would just ruin everything.

I’m very exited to hear they are coming out with a dragonball movie. I’ve been a fan waiting for this for too long. I just hope they get good actors andwork hard on the battle scenes. I guess getting tony jaa from the protector as goku and jet li as vegeta is too much to ask. That fight alone is worth 100 million.
if there going to bring out a dragonballz movie they will need to make at least 4-5 movies and go through all the sagas.

I don’t understand why any “hardcore” DBZ fan wouldn’t want them to make a live action movie. If you don’t want to watch the movie, don’t watch it. But just don’t ruin it for the hardcore fans out there that would pay to watch even the crappiest Dragonball Z live action movie just because we love the series. I’d say the real hardcore fans are the ones that will see the movie no matter what. All we can do is hope for the best.
I hear James Wong is directing it. He also directed Jet li’s “The One”, Final Destination, Final Destination III, and helped write 2006’s “Black Christmas.” I heard this at CHUD and other places, let’s hope it’s a rumor only.

hmm, even though my expectations are low, it is a pretty awsome idea, plus, think of the special FX these days. if they make the fight scenes satisfyin enough to watch then ill be happy. it wont ruin the series if its crap though.

yeah id say go with a primarily caucasian cast since its an american movie and most anime characters are designed to look caucasian anyway(anyone ever notice how asian characters look asian? secondly going by what they were looking for in the casting call this is going to take place during the King Piccolo saga is going to be more ‘realistic’ and Goku is described as being an uncool unpopular 18 yr old whos been doing martial arts his entire life.

Fox?! Oh, oh no. So this classic tale will be squashed with American movie making “necessity”, pandering to as big a demographic as possible. Oh no.

And I was so excited to hear it was finally confirmed. I guess I had my hopes up that it would be handled by those who could do it justice. Essentially, the Japanese. I guess it’s terrible timing in that I just saw the amazing Japanese emotional epic “Casshern”, and had thoughts of maybe, just maybe, there being the ability out there to make a live-action Dragonball Z live up to its endeared, animated original.

Lets get this one thing straight… The Saiyans are not japanese, they are aliens, they were not born in Japan. Chichi is japanese, and so is Bulma, making their kids half japanese. I don’t give a crap if they make the saiyans Japanese cuz they are not any of our earthly races so make them whatever the hell culture that looks most like them. I think there are a lot more caucasions that could pull the look of Goku off better than asian or any other race. And they better not put Jet Li or Jackie Chan in this movie, cuz they do not look like any of the dbz characters and they don’t act like any of them. All they can do is fight, and with technology and movie tricks the way they are today anyone can look good fighting. I also agree with rocks comment about how the DBZ characters should resemble the characters from 300, those guys were ripped, wouldn’t wanna mess with them. And they most definitely need new characters like they did for Superman and Batman. Hugh Jackman is a good wolverine but i cannot see him playing Goku, he just doesn’t suit it at all. They have a chance to make this a good movie, it is slim but still a chance, (although having Fox as it’s backing has decreased that chance even more.)
And yes they will have to make it a little more realistic than the series just cuz there are certain things that you can get away with in cartoon series that you cannot get away with in a live movie series.

i am a fan of the dragonball series and to see the movie coming out soo late is a little disapointing because its is not really popular any more. even though im from montreal i have to say that i dont like that there filming it in montreal because dragonball is based in a tropical area.

Here’s my take on it. There’s quite a few reasons it hadn’t made it to a live action until now, and the biggest reason is money. No, not that they didn’t have enough, but they wanted to franchise until they felt they’d make the biggest profit.
I can guarantee you, the very first time I saw the show, [English version], I was hooked, and knew without a doubt that eventually it’d see a live action screen. Even though it’s a japanese creation, with 20th Century Fox heading up the project, you can rest assured that it’ll have -some- actors that will give it a face and reputation.
I can guarantee you, that each and every one of us have watched at least one movie in our lives because “it had so and so” in it. I can agree that yes, I personally think the english Voice overs are what made it popular in the U.S. The voices seemed to fit perfectly with the character designs. So Ryuk is it, I 100% agree that the voicing/diction will be one of the biggest keys. By the way, I personally think Vin Diesel has the better voice, diction and body form for Picollo than Wesly Snipes. [And I hate Vin Diesel]
Graphics are key here. Transformers was awesome, yet choppy, as there were a lot of blank spots that never got filled in. My opinion, George Lucus should have his company play some part in it, as we all know he’s phenomenal in that department, [i.e. - Star Wars franchise. They had always been ahead of their game in graphic effects as far as movies go.] Hopefully they get the lighting and background effects right. I can understand “giving it a more serious feel” but still, the whole point of the show was power, the power to singlehandedly destroy galaxies with your bare hands, or save it from just that.
All in all, Casting, Graphic Effects, Locations, Voicing and Diction, as well as timing is everything if this movie is to be a complete success. I personally hope it is.
Also, think about it, the big “Cartoon to Live Action” movie trend just started a few years back. That’s another money reason why it got post poned so much. Gotta strike while the Iron is hot, not when it’s still cold.
PS - Hugh Jackman won’t be playing Goku, or any other role for that matter. From what I hear on rumor, he was “terminated” aka fired, for arriving on set exceptionally late, and intoxicated on several occations. [Note this is all hear say and opinion only, and does not reflect on 20th Century Fox or it's affiliates.]
One more thing…
I personally think the closest “DBZ Style” live action graphics would be the end fight between Mr. Smith and Neo in Matrix Revolutions. That was near to a TEE on how a DBZ fight would be.

It is a bit on the pathetic side, they haven’t even began filming and everyone is already dissappointed. Making a live action DBZ movie is no small feat, and I will garantee you it will have diffrences from the cartoon. It is a lot easier to draw something than recreate it. If you are going to be upset that it is not exactly the cartoon version, stay home and watch the cartoon. Please don’t sit next to me in theaters, cause if I have to listen to someone complaining the whole time I will be furious…especially because I heard Orlando Bloom is playing Tien and Jessica Alba is playing Buhma. dragonballz is an amazing anime , that inspired many others……..
but the problem with it is , no human can get close to the looks of the characters , and the fx for the powers will need a capable companny to render them, second of all humans with long , longer and ultimate length(ssj3 and 4) hair will look redicoulously funny….
but i like dbz and i hope fox will stunn me with an amazing movie
the anime sagas were truly brilliant and recreating that on the big screen will need one hell of a budget and alot of balls too. all anime fans should remember the all action ‘GUYVER’ remake that was absolutly awful and crushed the anime to dust.

with a big budget they could pull it off it needs the effects of star wars, x-men, matrix transformers and all the other great sci fi stuff rolled into this film but one thing i would demand is for them to be as close to the anime as possible ie cloths storyline and characters so on that note heres hoping they research well and do a good job

Well I know that Piccolo is being played by the same actor who’s Spike in Buffy/Angel (James Marsters) and Piccolo is the antagonist… but I’m not sure about the actor for Goku I would prefer a Japanese cast, for some reason I can’t picture this chatwin guy as a good goku (maybe Toshiro Takeda from ninja warrior ^_^…no? j/k he’s not an actor) and I wonder what age Gohan (my favorite) and Trunks would be (if they are in it) because Adult Gohan would be a lot cuter if he was played by Takeshi Kaneshiro (sorry I know it’s kinda irrelevant, but I’m a girl I can’t help it)and Trunks is pretty and nothing captures pretty better than Asian drama actors. but looks aside this movie better be packed with action and a good story i expect a least Transformers quality, but I feel it might be like x-men 3 (as long as it is not Fist of the North Star live action bad I can probably tolerate it)
I think that they made a bad choice on who to cast for this movie. No one is powerfull enough to pull this off. I was hoping for someone like Collin Farell for Goku, and I saw a suggestion for Wesley Snipes for Piccolo. That would be awesome. I have seen some of the promo pictures and Buffys vampire looks cheezy as Piccolo. I hope they don’t screw this up - but i think they will. It will take a great cast, an awesome director, and a good storyline. Not to mention a big budget for animation.

I think that there is a possibility that they will really mess this one up. however i think that if they do a good job it will be a good chance to prove that they can do just about anything. hah. and that would be another good thing if they decided to split it up into 3 or 4 movies to show all the sagas. i think itll be cool to see what happens.

Well I belive that It would be a good/bad movie only because of well I think because of the acters playibg in this movie. For example, what I saw on the enternet mini me (sorry for my spelling) will act as krillin. I think that golberg would be a good Nappa. But Jackie chan as goku? WHAT THE F**K.
I just cant see Jackie as goku. If you check out the imdb site and do a search for the dragonball movie 2009, they have a listing of all the actors so far signed for the movie, and I’m not impressed. There are some well known names like Chow Yun Fat as Roshi and James Marsters as Piccolo. Something to know that the movie will stick to the original story is that Akira Toriyama is the writer on the movie.
Holy Crap! DBZ live action movie!?? I know 20th Century Fox will screw this right up! They should’ve just left it as a cartoon. And although I’m like the 3rd biggest fan of DBZ(known about if since i was 4.),
I’m not in a big hurry to see the movie….I mean c’mon! Justin Chatwin as Goku!!?? They would’ve been better off using TOM CRUISE!! Jeeze!!

Alright, I’m a hardcore fan, been watching the show since it first came to cartoon network and I got to say I really hope this movie doesn’t come out since it will be nothing more than a pathetic excuse for an action movie using the dbz license. For anybody saying that they are looking forward to the movie, it’s just not going to dragonball at all. It’s going to be just another hyped up crap action movie using the same character names. I can assure you they will change a significant amount from the actual story, take out most of Akira’s creative elements, seeing as he has been kicked off of the project, and use characters that look completely different from the originals, except for maybe picolo. The movie just seems like it’s going to be generic and cash in on awesome, but dead series and not even stay true to it.
Okay fist off, Goku, Vegeta, Brolly, etc. arn’t Asian. ‘Nuff said.
The only actors needed for this movie are the ones who supplied the voices for the anime series. What needs to happen to make the Dragon Ball Z Moive a reality, and at least half way decient, is to use the CGI works that were used in the new Beowulf.
TYLER said it all. There is no way in hell you can make this a live action movie. You need the voices from the show and amazing CGI to pull this off right. Toriyama is the writer so that is a positive. He needs to man up and say what the fans really want; old school Goku ,Vegeta new school graphics!
Personally I think Goku, Vegeta and the other Saiyans look Asian. Even when I was a kid in 1999 I thought Nappa looked like a Mongol hoarde warrior stereotype and I immediately recognized Goku, Gohan, Vegeta and Chichi as Asian. They just look like Asian people with wide, rounded anime-ish eyes to me. Funny they knew to keep Chichi Asian even though her eyes are more rounded and larger than Goku’s (for all the people claiming Goku looks “white”). Anyway, I think most of the cast should be Asian or Asian-American because Dragonball is based off of a CHINESE legend - “Journey To The West”. Many of the DB characters are based on characters from that story and most of the locations in DB are based on locations in Journey To The West, like Yamcha the desert thief being located in a desert similar to the Chinese Gobi Desert. To make the main characters of DB White is whitewashing the culture, it would be like having a mostly or largely Black or Latino cast for Beowulf or King Arthur. Not only that, people keep harping on the fact that Goku is an alien and not Asian in the earthling sense. Yes, that is true, but because he is an alien doesn’t mean he can’t look Asian. Superman (Kal’El) is an alien from the planet Krypton but looks suspiciously like a White man from Earth. Now who would be defending these “Superman isn’t White, he’s an alien” arguments if Martin Lawrence or Cheech Marin was cast as Superman/Clark Kent?
Also, for the people claiming that they made Goku White because a White lead would draw in more viewers, that just goes to show that America is still a very racist country when it comes to entertainment. Why would non-Asian people not see a movie unless the lead was the same race as them (or White)? Americans really need to stop patting ourselves on the back and pretending we’re racially progressive just because Jim Crow is over and because there’s a smiling, non-threatening Biracial (but mostly phenotypically Black) man who distances himself from the Black community and mainstream Black politics running for president [Barack Obama]. The fact that a non-White lead who isn’t Denzel Washington or Will Smith lowers viewership and sales shows that racism is still very much alive in our preferences.
well yeah I’ve been craving for something like this for some time now. I still think that Keeanue Reeves should still play goku and Tom Cruise should play either Yancha or the older version of Goku. and Jonothan Taylor Thomas should be his son Gohan!
LOL, Keanu Reeves would probably make a better Goku than Chatwin. Reeves already has the air-headed persona down, rofl. I saw War of the Worlds many times and I thought Chatwin was not a good actor. He seemed like a dickwad in the movie and the scene where he yells at Tom Cruise for not following the military caravan made me cringe because of how bad his acting was. A lot of the people who support him are fangirls who think he’s “cute” (ugh) or moviegoers who want to see another White kid practice martial arts a la “The Karate Kid” (from what I can tell based on responses). Tom Cruise as Yamcha…….well…..couldn’t be any worse than the current guy.
Of course this movie will suck–WHAT THE HELL! Although I luv DBZ, FOX will screw this right up….by the way people I’m the same as Jonah MacDonald–I’m the same guy..LOL

LOL! I agree with Uub Rocks! and Mista’ Macadelli. Anyone who isn’t closing their eyes and self-deceivingly wishing the movie will be good can look at the cast and see that it’s a joke. Justin Chatwin (whose biggest role was the emo character in War of the Worlds that a lot of people found irritating and thought should have died instead of show up at the end of the movie), Emmy Rossum (seems like a teeny-bopper actress, even the way she calls herself “Emmy” instead of “Emily”, like a Rebecca calling herself “Becki/Becka”), Ernie Hudson (seriously, WTF?), and some other no-name actors. This movie is just begging to fail. The fact that Stephen Chow left, Akira Toriyama is less than enthusiastic about this movie and Japan is boycotting it should be setting off red alarms in people’s heads. But alas, a lot of Americans are too dense and have our heads too far up our collective asses to see the writing on the wall.
I mean, they just finished casting a couple of months ago and the movie is already in post-production stage. Go check IMDB. WTF? They finished filming in less than 3 months after getting the full cast? That’s not a good sign, the only movies I ever hear of being made that fast are B-action and horror flicks and straight-to-DVD sequels.
Even though it’s kind of silly to do a live-action DB/Z movie, they could possibly redeem themselves by making this movie straight-to-DVD and starting over from scratch like they’re trying to do with this 2008 “Hulk” movie remake to make up for the 2003 Hulk flop.
The main issue the movie needs to tackle is the storyline. The action, matrix equivelent should do the movie justice. But i really think the main probelm would be the fact that anything less then 2 half hour would do the movie injustice
finaly! I am aDBZ fan and I am also know a few things on making movies. I think the idea of live DBZ movie is very possible. I’ve searched the net and found that if the movie is made that it will be based on Dragon Ball (the very first episodes) where picallo is the bad guy, and sure they might have to get rid of some things like a few talking animals but I can live with that.
Also, people might not like the idea of a DBZ movie,but just look at Transformers.

I’m sorry if this upsets anyone here but I am the biggest DBZ fan ever and I have serious doubts about the project. as you all know the first talks of this film began almost ten years and I am glad to see it finaly get off the ground. first off I have to say the movie they are working on is not a DBZ but a DB movie, not that there’s anything wrong with that, but I don’t think anyone really wants to see that. second, from what I’ve seen on IMDB(seeing as how everything I have heard previously were just rumors I don’t know if they are the real cast if there is even is one) the casting is less then decent, with Chow-Yun-Fat listed to play Master Roshi. I think that should say everything that needs to be said about this production. CHOW-YUN-FAT AS ROSHI!!!!! how can anyone think that a 6′?” 40something guy with a full head of BLACK hair can play a 4′ old ass bald man. and don’t even get me started on how the hell they’re going to pull off the hair AT ALL!!!I could go on like this for hours, but in short I’m just going to say ANYONE THAT LIKES OR LOVES DRAGONBAL SHOULD STAY AWAY FROM THIS PILE OF DOGSHIT THEY’RE TRYING TO PASS OFF AS A DB MOVIE. thank you and sorry if I offended anyone.

Personally, it all boils down to the actors and their conviction to character. You could put Jet Li in as Vegita, and it wouldnt come off due to his acting style. You use someone like the bald headed villian from Con-Air (cant remember his name) and you have a good match for Vegita due to his ability to play a bad ass bad guy turned good. Bill Goldberg would not make a good Nappa and so on. Personally though, if I had a story line to go with I honestly think without a doubt they should do a live action movie involving Brolly. Hands down out of all the bad guys in the DBZ universe, he was the baddest of them all. And with the limited amount of vocabulary he had, you could use just about anyone to play him as long as they had the size and could muster a mean assed look like he had. At any rate whather it ultimately sucks or not, I will pay to go see it when it comes out, and buy th dvd after that even if it does suck. I am a true fan.
