666 Satan (O-Part’s Hunter) Manga Review

1.jpgTake Dragon Ball, Naruto, Yu Yu Hakusho, and a little custom thought, throw it in a blender, put it in a printing press, and you get 666 Satan.

Indeed, reading this manga was like reading those 3 animes all over again. As a matter of fact, the author, Seishi Kishimoto has been criticized for this thousands of times over. But to kick a man down, I am not here to do. As a matter of fact, I am here to do quite the oposite.

First things first, if the name Seishi Kishimoto strikes any glaring resemblance to another author, then you would be correct. He is indeed the younger brother of Masashi Kishimoto, author of Naruto.

666 Satan bares an extreme resemblance to Naruto, both in art style, ideas, and plot. Perhaps we can attribute this to the fact that the brothers are twins. Twins tend to think alot alike. However, I’m not a psychologist, nor am I here to analyze genetic traits so to the point.

666 Satan follows the story of a boy named Jio Freed and a young girl named Ruby Crescent. Ruby meets Jio on her quest for legendary O-Parts only to discover that Jio Freed himself is an O.P.T.

To give a little background information on the story, which heavily draws from Japanese Folklore, Demonology, and Kabbalah; O-Parts are ancient relics - resembling present time tools, appliances, and weapons - hidden under the ground and in the sky (literally) which contain hidden powers known as Effects. Only certain people can draw upon these Effects. They are known as O.P.T. (O-Part Tactician). An O.P.T. draws upon, their own spirit (life energy) to activate the Effect of an O-Part.colo_666_satan_1.jpg

Back to our review. As Jio begins to learn more about himself through his travels, he finds he houses a demon inside of him. But not just any demon. Jio’s body is host to The Beast himself, Satan. His white and black hair, black and red eyes, and even his clothing style, is literally a direct representation of the conflicting good and evil conflicting within himself. He later meets a strange, young boy later named Ball, who is also (at the time, unbeknowst to him) an O.P.T. Toghether, they travel, participating in tournaments, receiving training, and constantly battling with the Zenom organization and the Satan within himself.

666 Satan (also known as O-Parts Hunter) is an interesting story. If one can put aside the wanton similarities to other creations, one would find this is actually quite original and indeed worth the read.

Score Breakdown

Originality: 8/10

Of course this can be called into question, especially considering the similarites to other manga’s, but I can remember myself, always being told, “Imitation is the best form of flattery”.

Art: 9.2/10

There are subtle messages to be found in the art style of this manga. Beyond the obvious, there are the conflicts even shown within the work. From clothing (see, Jio Freed) to the angels and demons, and the animations, this is actually great artwork.

Story: 7/10

The story is somewhat lacking, especially in its presentation. In some cases, a little more originality could have also been useful. I mean lets be serious here. A hermit trains two young boys (whom, might I mention, wear weights on their backs) who later surpass their master and even participate in a2.jpg tournament. Dragon Ball, anyone? A Dark tournament, no less, where there are several ships traveling to a sky, upon which the tournament preliminaries are held. Yu Yu Hakusho… The story, is interesting, no less.

Characters: 7.8/10

Also needing in originality - A young boy carrying a demon within him and is shunned by society, has very few friends, and has no idea to a point. Naruto! Yet, the characters are actually presented decently.

Final Score: 8.3 out of 10 (*Not an average)

About the similarities to Naruto. The Creator of 666 Satan/O-parts hunter and The creator of Naruto are brothers….

I think people should stop comparing this series to Naruto. It bears similarities, but I think the concept and overall stories are much richer than Naruto’s.

I think that both plots are of equal originality…..though they bear similar plot lines….the angle portrayed is on two totally different levels….one is the society of Ninjas…the other a society of Heaven, Hell, Demons, and Angels……but they are both very good mangas….and should be made into animes…which they are

Yes it has similarities to naruto but if you think about it, if 666 Satan had come out before naruto, wouldnt you be complaining about naruto having similarities to it?

i personally think that 666 Satan/O-parts hunter (japanese name is way cooler) is much better than naruto…

It is true, even though naruto and 666 satan bear some similarities, 666 satan has different style than naruto and to me i seriously fell in love with both naruto and 666 satan and see that each has its own way of story…

I think even if there are similarities between the plot and characters of Naruto and 666, so what? I’m a bigger Naruto fan myself, but it annoys me when people say “Seishi-sensei is a copycat.” In the entire Japanese manga industry, there are many similar aspects in lots of manga series… i mean, how many magical girl shoujo manga series are there?

It is annoying when Seishi-sensei is accused of being a copycat. In fact, I’m highly offended when ignorant people do so. To get to the point, though, 666 Satan is just…awesome. At first, I was a bit skeptical, but I was quickly sucked in the story. I nearly cried several times and grew to love the series. Actually, I think I love it MORE than Naruto. My only regrets on the series are that it hasn’t gotten as much attention in the States as it should (I suppose this is because people are too wrapped up in Naruto) and that the series is over. I loved it too much to stop wanting to read more. ^^

Actually, Naruto was first published in November 1999
while 666 Satan was first published in 2001.

But for some reason, I read 666 satan first, and after reading Naruto, I believe both are awesome in their own way.

And about the similarities, uhh… they ARE similar. But they are twins, so yeah…
However, they are different in many ways too. I mean ninjas in Naruto while angels, deomons etc in 666 satan.

Despite the differences, I do believe they are about equal in awesome-ness. I mean, they were both pretty young when they started publishing their mangas.

Well, at first both mangas (666 Satan and Naruto) are really similar. However, the further you read, the further apart they branch. By the end, there is really no relation at all. Plus, in my opinion, the later chapters are really much better than the beginning of the series. Either way, I loved it, too bad its all over.

  13. @fairkid: I acknowledge the same myself, however, by the time this article was written, the story hadn’t advanced much more than 30 or so chapters.

    Nonsense!
    Don’t say such worse things!
O-Parts Hunter is a great manga, with it’s own fascinating touch!!
It’s so sad, that everywhere you can read “the twin of Naruto’s creator” but where, please, where! you can read that Seishi is Masashis twin at a page abou him?!
He don’t had to hide behind his bro. He is great! If Naruto Fans just weren’t such ignorant he could be as famous as his twin.
    Damn ~.~

Yes, 666 Satan has its own touch, style etc. at first it seems like a great manga. But while I wish it would be made into an anime, I know it won’t because it just lacks on so many levels. The whole demon/angel story part isn’t polished to its full potential. Dialog is just horrible. Art is fine, just like Naruto.
